Celebrate your equine pal’s birthday with an easy cake recipe they will all adore!
We recently celebrated our Quinarius Velvet’s 25th birthday celebration with a homemade molasses carrot cake that she and all her equine friends absolutely adored!
Considering that we have all senior horse residents with varying dietary restrictions and food preferences, I wanted to make a cake that Quin would love to devour and that all her horse friends would truly enjoy sharing together. I have made many cakes and cookies in the past, but this recipe has become our most successful hit with the horses, and by far the easiest to make.
We hope you will consider making this cake for your equine friend’s next birthday party — and please let us know if you do, and any customizations or changes you provide for your companion’s special celebration! :)
Please note: the ingredient amounts can be altered to fit your horse’s specific dietary needs and restrictions, using the same wet to dry ratio. Because of the special celebration, we offered these ingredients to our horses since they do not get them often.

Ingredients
Oats — 5 cups
Flaxseed Meal — 1 cup
Applesauce — 3 cups
Molasses — 1 cup
Carrots (shredded) — 3 to 4 large carrots
Cinnamon — 3 teaspoons
If too dry, add water (small amounts at a time!)
Optional: any desired toppings (for example: more carrots, blueberries, horse treats, powdered sugar, maple syrup, celery, pumpkin, etc.)
Tools needed
Large mixing bowl
Wooden or metal spoon
Knife or grater
Cup and teaspoon measuring spoons (unless you are good at eyeballing measurements!)
Parchment paper
Metal baking pan or tray
Oven
Oven mitt or towel
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Starting with the dry ingredients first then adding the wet ingredients, add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and stir rigorously.
[Tip: when adding the dry ingredients in the bowl, make a crater in the bowl before adding the wet ingredients]. If the mixture is too dry, add small amounts of water at a time.
Line your baking pan with parchment paper.
When oven is preheated and mixture is ready, pour all contents into your pan onto the parchment paper.
Place your pan into the oven and bake for approximately 25 to 35 minutes. [Tip: reminder to set a timer so you don’t forget, like I did! Haha. I was going for 30 minutes, but thankfully the extra 5 minutes our cake was in helped it set correctly and did not burn at all.]
Remove from oven when ready, and let it cool completely.
Top with any of your optional, favorite toppings [for Quin’s cake, I dripped a small amount of maple syrup where I was going to place the blueberries, then sprinkled a small amount of powdered sugar, along with placing the blueberries to form a star.]
Serve to your equine friend(s), and enjoy!
